Storm Proton PhysiX Review
While no longer in production, the Storm Proton PhysiX remains one of the strongest hooking balls ever created for heavy oil conditions. Bowlers can often find this hook monster at discounted prices on the used market, making it an excellent value for those needing maximum oil handling capability.
what's up guys jr raymond back again coming to you from shot makers pro shop yeah that's right we're back in toledo ohio because our stupid governor decided to shut everything down again so we're coming back to toledo ohio shot makers pro sop with keith nesbaum and aaron vollmer over here running the show doing everything you need so we're gonna do that proton physics first up i got a bunch of videos coming over the next couple of weeks or so so stay tuned to that but today we're gonna take that proton physics out on the lane we've actually got a 45 foot pattern out here it's called the sloth pattern
maybe i'll be able to put an image of that pattern up for you but it's not exactly an easy pattern it's a little bit flatter longer pattern so you're going to see it on something different so here we go proton physics out here at new glass bowl shop makers pro shop ready to go let's rock
[Music] all right here we go we're going to take a look at this proton physics we've got uh it's 55 by 5 by 45 so that pen gets up above my my middle finger you can see the layout on the screen but we're gonna try to get to that 8 9 10 range to start again this is 45 feet a little bit different than a leak pattern so there's not as much hook to
the right now this is a flatter pattern um a lot of two to two's on it so you're going to see a bunch more oil to the right maybe not not a bunch because it is laid out overall league pattern so it's gonna still have some bounce to the right so uh that was surprising i missed right and it's still picked up and hooked now this is the ball that everybody's raving about all the storm fans all the storm staffers they say this ball is ridiculous so i'm going to go back right i'm going
to go to right with my feet i'll move my eyes one right that picks up i don't have any reset buttons here either so that's what stinks i'm gonna have to throw a ball down there at it that's okay we can get her done make it nice and simple but uh
you see that was just a little bit right so i'm gonna go i'm gonna keep going right a little bit with it and i'm gonna see what it does as it gets closer to the gutter closer to where the hang is supposed to be so i'm gonna go two more right again this time i'm gonna move my eyes too right so now i'm looking at five i'll probably hit six or seven oh it picked up oh baby that picked up really nice off of that so i threw it a few times kind of
warming up and stuff earlier and i'm like oh man that's going to be another big strong slow bowling ball this is saying now after a few shots it's it's really picking up this is what is this that xen or nex cover on it or whatever i don't remember what other bowling ball has that but all right let's start moving left i'm gonna go i'm gonna try to get to that 13 14 15 range and just see what it does in the middle of the line now or as i go left
it's strong it really really reads that it wants to read before the middle of the lane it wants to read like at that splice so before it gets down lane it really wants to read it was really good in the oil to the right you see it float through there and then pick up and go so you see some volume on the lanes this ball is going to be great it may be great either way but all right i'll go four left four and two see if it hooks
oh oh it did hook that one floated a little bit my balance was awful that one didn't come off my hand the greatest but it still got there so that's good news we're pulling on this pattern 45 feet tomorrow might be less surface as far as lanes go so the way this looks i'm taking this ball for sure but all right here we go that was four left so let's go five more left five more left look at 18 19 area
probably hit 20 or so oh that was bad that was way bad that was not good don't do that everything you just saw don't do it bad news bears i don't know why i did it but i did it all right let's see if we can make a spare let's use this as a spare ball see if it makes a spare
oh it ain't gonna oh i'm blaming the ball it's not user operator error i'm blaming the ball ball's fault i'm just kidding obviously all right i got that out of the way let's see let's throw a good one from that spot now let's see what it what it wants to do get this one going right that's better yeah
this is gonna be pretty darn good especially on these tougher patterns again this ain't a leak pattern so the fact that it's picking up this much is going to show you quite a bit more on elite condition i'll remove about five more left see when you get to 2122 or get my hand around it a bit
oh i got it right i got it right it's still hooked but got that little half shaker 10 in there that's okay that's good news again on a flatter pattern if i can miss right like that the surface is going to pick up and still get to the pocket that is what we're looking for so might as well shoot the spare while we're at it see if it really is user or ball
oh dang it must have been user come on man all right my best joe biden voice come on man come on come on man come on man all right all right here we go going left
ah yeah it's gonna have a hard time going really far left or right because of how strong of a covering cord is but if i shut that down it might be okay but man anything in the middle lane like let's say 20 and right it's gonna be really good so if i were to let's throw a comparison in there you guys know how much i oh come on back up keep going keep going see i can make spares if i make a comparison i'll throw that
rst that rotogrip ball and just try to throw it around there and see what it does but again it was smooth i practiced with it a little bit too and it was pretty smooth on this condition but it's a weaker cover i think so it should give me a little bit stronger pop down lane who knows let's find out let's find out my hand around it
so you just see it pick up a little bit quicker as well didn't pick up the front or the middle as much as the proton did but it picked up the back part of the lane quite a bit more all right there you go so that's that proton physics you can see the strength the uh the how strong it is in the front the middle part of the lane big surface big cover big core uh this thing gets up and goes you saw how great it was playing straighter when there was a little bit of oil there it picked up off of the dry and it drove through the pins super hard as i went left though it was good up
until i got to about 22 23. started to labor a little bit because now it's using up a little bit too much energy doesn't quite have enough strength getting through the pins probably could have made some adjustments some people are going to make it work in there but for me i'm going to be using this ball a little bit straighter right of 20 on bigger oil patterns so if you see a a league pattern where you get a lot of volume and you're looking for hook this is going to be that ball for you so make sure to head over to bowler x.com get yours today bring it up here to shopmakers pro shop and get it drilled up or take it over to classic lanes to mrb
classic pro shop as soon as we're back open again in about three weeks but until next time guys i'm out of here make sure to like and subscribe and do all that stuff like like like hit that like button hit the comments do all everything you can there try to get this out there as much as you can until next time i'm out of here see you guys later you
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Storm Proton PhysiX to be a strong, aggressive reactive solid that excels in heavy oil environments. On a 45-foot flatter house pattern, the ball demonstrated impressive early-lane reading characteristics, initiating hook significantly before the midlane and picking up nicely off the dry boards. Independent reviewers observed that the ball’s reactive solid coverstock made it particularly responsive to friction, allowing it to maintain momentum through the pins even when missing slightly right on an oil-heavy pattern. The coverstock’s aggressive nature meant the ball wanted to read early—around the splice area—which translated to excellent carry even on non-ideal pocket hits. When thrown in the 13-22 board range, the ball showed strong, predictable motion through the middle and back portions of the lane.
The testing also highlighted the Proton PhysiX’s limitations when pushed too far left (beyond the 22-23 board range on this pattern). Reviewers noted that in these extreme angles on flatter patterns, the ball began to labor, expending too much energy in the mid-lane and losing some of its drive through the pins. A comparison throw against a weaker-cover reactive revealed that the Proton PhysiX reads the front and middle portions of the lane much more aggressively, though the comparison ball picked up slightly faster in the backend. For bowlers targeting the optimal strike line, the ball performed exceptionally well in the 15-22 board window, where the combination of early length and strong midlane continuation produced consistently aggressive backend motion.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Proton PhysiX is built for league and tournament bowlers seeking a heavy oil specialist with strong, predictable motion. Bowlers who throw straighter angles and prefer to stay right of the 20 board will find this ball’s aggressive reading and powerful pin carry particularly valuable. It’s an excellent choice for players facing high-volume oil patterns and league shots where early-length, controlled motion through the pins matters more than extreme angular variety.
This ball is less ideal for bowlers who frequently play deep into the dry boards or who prefer weaker, longer-length reactions. Bowlers with slower ball speeds may appreciate the Proton PhysiX’s strong cover and early reading, as it responds well to friction, though players needing backend versatility across a wide board range may find themselves limited by the ball’s aggressive nature when forced to extreme angles. For those committed to heavy oil play and willing to adjust their line accordingly, the Proton PhysiX delivers the strength and consistency this pricing tier promises.
