Roto Grip Exotic Gem Review
While no longer in production, the Exotic Gem remains a formidable option on the used market for serious bowlers who need maximum performance on heavy oil. Its combination of the proven Defiant LRG core and MicroTrax Pearl coverstock creates one of the strongest pearl reactions available.
hello and welcome to our report card for the Exotic gem if you haven't seen one of these before basically what I do is go back and revisit a ball that's been out for a few months to check in see how popular it's been see if I got it right in the review and report on how much we've used it and what it's best at some people want to have certain balls as soon as they come out while other people will wait for a few months to judge the reception and staying power also since it is a report card I will actually be giving out grades kind of we're going to have a little more fun with it going forward before we get started big shout out and thanks as always to Royal Crest Lane they're a big part of bringing
these videos to you all it takes is a text and we have everything we need also my code Rose do 10 will get you 10% off your order check out at coolwick and if you check the description you'll find a bunch of helpful links and information including our personal specs and a link to buy the Exotic at bowlersmart I do receive a 5% Commission on all sales through the link first of all unfortunately my return to the right side was shortlived it at least got me through this review but then quickly proved itself to not be an option so Lefty life it is if it only was as easy as everyone thinks it is is moving into the video I said in the initial review
and we'll say it again the Exotic is absolutely exactly what you would expect out of a pearl gem same gem reaction just longer sharper and a touch weaker if anything this makes the Exotic more versatile than the gem because even if you polish the gem it still kind of wants to be a tank the Exotic can be every bit as strong as the gem with some surface but without being quite so early and smooth the bowling math doesn't always work out expectations on paper verse reaction on the lane can be quite different but in this case it works out exactly the way it should

for a full reaction analysis and righty vers Lefty breakdown definitely check out the foreview this at least gives you a general look at both sides sides on a couple different patterns with different surfaces but this video isn't for digging deep just checking in the Exotic is a ball that takes a look like the altered reality or eternity and beefs it up more traction earlier reaction little less shape it's definitely playable on a house shot you just need speed or a solid amount of oil and it's especially good on heavier sport patterns if the pros haven't made that clear by now uh we've seen a lot of it on both
professional tours for me as we go to the new Kool-Aid meter to rank them it comes in at a seven on the left on this side it's virtually unth for me you can see that even with straight flagging out of it from fourth Arrow it's still chugging slowing down reacting very strongly and going through the pin well it looks great there's just no reason for me to have to get this deep and be this gentle with a ball just to keep it off the headpin when I have other stuff that fits better the likelihood of me needing a ball like this is very low I have a higher rev
rate and a more rolly game than most lefties so this isn't me saying it isn't a lefty ball period it's just not a me Lefty ball it would fit plenty of typical up theboard Strokers who need a nice blend of traction hook roll and shape on the right side easy9 it's nice the blend I just mentioned makes it super comfy as a righty righties have earlier but smoother reaction so while it's more Dynamic on the left it's pretty buttery on the right and it looks just as good on the sport pattern I do have the full review linked at the end
if you want to take a look and both balls are drilled with exactly the same layout Lefty and righty specific of course if I'd have been able to make it work righty again I'd have been throwing this a lot it's such a nice blend to Lane control and effective shape I love this little fallback fade shot through the middle and this is just the perfect type of ball to do that with it's still going to be really strong for most people but I've seen a lot of these in play and they look just as good for the average League crowd as they do for the pros it's a very well balanced ball that plays well in a lot more situations than it really should check out the

Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Roto Grip Exotic Gem delivers precisely what bowlers should expect from a pearl gem variant—a longer, sharper reaction with slightly reduced early motion compared to its solid counterpart. Independent reviewers observed that the pearl coverstock enables greater versatility than the original Gem; while a polished Gem tends toward early, smooth behavior, the Exotic maintains comparable strength with surface adjustments while offering cleaner length down the lane. The distinction matters: bowlers can fine-tune the Exotic’s aggression through surface manipulation without fighting an inherently early-reading core. On house shots, the ball proved playable but demands either higher ball speed or adequate oil volume to shine. Performance truly excels on heavier sport patterns, where the blend of traction, hook, and controlled shape creates a dependable mid-lane read.
On the test patterns examined, the Exotic displayed notably different characteristics between right-handed and left-handed release. Right-handers experienced a buttery, well-blended reaction that paired strong pin action with predictable shape—making it equally at home in league play and professional competition. The ball’s “fallback fade” through the pocket demonstrates its ability to maintain control on the backend despite significant forward motion. Left-hand testers found the ball’s strength and early traction beneficial for up-the-boards strokers but noted it may prove less essential for higher-rev, more rotational release angles. Across both formats, the Exotic proved remarkably balanced and effective across a wider variety of lane conditions than typical asymmetric pearl designs.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Exotic Gem is ideally suited for bowlers seeking a do-it-all pearl that works equally well on sport patterns and house shots. Right-handers will find this ball particularly comfortable, as its buttery transition and controlled shape make it forgiving without sacrificing backend motion. League bowlers and early-stage tournament competitors benefit most—the ball provides enough traction and pin action to reward solid technique while remaining approachable for varying oil conditions. Those with moderate to higher ball speeds will see the Exotic shine brightest; slower-speed bowlers may need fuller oil patterns to unlock its potential.
For left-handers, the Exotic works best as part of a larger arsenal, particularly for strokers who play up the boards and need a balanced blend of early traction and predictable shape. While capable left-handers will appreciate its versatility, those with higher rev rates or more rotational styles may find more specialized tools better suited to their release. Bowlers already owning a solid Gem should evaluate whether the additional length and sharpness fills a genuine gap in their bag before committing—the upgrade path depends on desired lane conditions rather than automatic necessity.
The Pros
- • Exceptional hook potential with asymmetric Defiant LRG core
- • Strong backend reaction despite pearl coverstock
- • Excellent performance on heavy oil patterns
The Cons
- • Limited versatility outside of heavy oil conditions
- • May be too aggressive for recreational bowlers
