Roto Grip RST X-3 Review
While no longer in production, the RST X-3 remains a solid option on the used market for bowlers needing reliable performance on medium-heavy oil conditions. The combination of the RST core and MicroTrax Hybrid coverstock delivers consistent hook potential with impressive pin action.
what's going on youtube world uh today i'm looking at the roto grip x3 uh very excited about this one another hybrid it gives me that hyper cell look like once you get it in person like on the screen like the little computer generator thing doesn't look as much but soon as you get it pick it up it's exactly what it gives me that vibe the hyper cell so of course this is not a hyper cell but again it's currently what it does same layout as always i'll flash that across the screen as well you can see it but yeah man we're gonna compare that to
the reality check and we'll see what these all look like so i'm gonna get warmed up and then uh we get to some shots
so i'm a couple shots in the ball looks pretty good um still once i think the telltale sign is really once i throw the reality check to see if it's faster or slower um and you know off rip again this ball is brighter so it kind of gives you the illusion that it's hooking more so i'm going to see once we pick up the reality check and see which one is actually faster which one's cornery but yeah so i'm gonna give you about probably about two three more shots uh with the x3 and then we're gonna get the reality check
[Music] [Music] so to give some more thoughts too like i still play right with this um it's like one of those bigger a sims like a speed um polaris hybrid uh you know that you still can use you know kind of throughout the night you
can start this game one and then you still can transition to it so we'll see after i get more games on this lane and how it breaks down to see how the ball actually responds [Applause] [Music]
and actually i'm gonna finish this whole game uh and i'll show you show you the score i'll pan it up here in a moment i do a lot of strike with this ball being very honest guys again i'm leaving every shot in order again i might chop it up for time's sake but i'm striking a bunch with this ball like out of box me fresh off the street this ball is doing what it's doing
you got way around that one oh man so like i've thrown this ball a ton of different ways right now just from again trying to move around trying to get around around the ball a little bit uh move a little left move a little right and it's still striking like again i'm not making this up like but this is pretty fun man [Music]
let me show you the score real quick first game with the x3 276 out of box didn't change the surface didn't do anything different do it tried a bunch of different angles and that's what happened ball's not too bad so we're gonna check out the reality check now and see what this ball really looks like man and again to the top end hybrids that's offered so see what they do
that's crazy [Music] [Music]
[Music] so out of box around a box it seems still like the x3 is more down lane hooked so i'm gonna keep throwing the reality check a little more and let's see again give it a little more time damn dash
[Music] so far the ball needs some friction for sure trying to move left on it it didn't look as good as x3 did that's just again i see some people reality check corn is a lot harder than mine i mean i don't know again maybe it's the style difference um that you know we're just seeing a bigger difference honestly but let me get this one a couple more shots and then we'll transition to my next angles then talk about the numbers
so when we look we look at it the reality check is still just a pinch slower uh even at the 4k fast uh in the future we will be doing one at 1500 grit polish just to get an idea what this ball could look like at something that it may have come out with um different finish but this x3 i don't care if it's at 4k at 2000 polish i think this one's just good i think this just fits my game it fits my eye what i'd like to see and man it's
definitely competing for that that first ball out of my bag spot with the polaris hybrid and quantum evil hybrid so we look at the numbers this why i believe it begins to make sense it the higher rg is pushing it down the lane a little bit more retain a little more energy that's a lot of differential so again all these factors make for a ball that wants to you know go like it hooks off the break point so for me that's what i like to see i don't i don't want too much stuff i'm not bowling on a lot of the harder harder
stuff at the moment so you know at some point you know i started doing regionals and things like that then the reality check might get get a little more play because i want something a little tamer that i can predict uh but for a house man give me the x3 all day like just being you know quite frank you know i see it i see a lot of oil here i saw grass lanes so i want something that's going to hook the reality check is a little too smooth for me for my liking uh but again i understand why some people might like it if you're on a higher friction house the reality check
is gonna be perfect the x3 might be too much ball so and again for me and my current situation hey man x3 all day but if you're looking for that super super tech review man go check out luke rose at all he's already put out several several videos that all kind of explain even more detail and compares the covers and the cores uh to you know he just has so much more experience especially in the storm line specifically like stormbrother and global like again he can just compare things that you know i just haven't i'm not
even familiar with i haven't thrown the x1 so i wouldn't know i'm talking about things that i know like the reality check so again as we continue to throw throw these balls man there's gonna be some more more content coming uh and again i'm just having fun right now man and this ball is just really good uh like again this is definitely competing for that first spot in my bag uh so we're gonna see how that plays out and i'll do another uh what's in my bag update uh here in a couple weeks uh but
as at the league season gets ready to start so if you like the ball if you like what you've seen use the links below to pick pick one up that really goes a long way to support the channel until next time
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Independent testing revealed that the Roto Grip RST X-3 delivers strong angular motion and backend reaction on medium-heavy oil house conditions. When thrown fresh out of the box without surface adjustments, the ball generated consistent striking power, with the tester averaging 276 pins in the first game while experimenting with multiple angles and release points. The asymmetric core’s higher RG value keeps the ball in the track longer down the lane before making an aggressive move through the breakpoint—a characteristic that distinguishes it from smoother-reacting comparisons like the Reality Check. On the oil-heavy lanes tested, the X-3 proved versatile enough to be repositioned left and right throughout a game while maintaining strike-line effectiveness, suggesting strong pin action and predictability within its intended oil range.
When compared directly to another hybrid coverstock option on the same pattern, testing showed the X-3 maintained superior down-lane length and earlier hook initiation. The Reality Check, by contrast, played slightly slower and required additional friction to match the X-3’s aggression—a difference that testing footage at high-speed playback made visually apparent. Surface adjustments were not required during evaluation; the box finish performed as designed. Reviewers noted that the ball’s visual appearance (described as having a vibrant, eye-catching aesthetic) matched its strong performance, and the X-3 demonstrated enough controlled motion to compete for a primary bag position alongside other premium medium-heavy asymmetric options.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Roto Grip RST X-3 is ideally suited for bowlers playing house shot conditions with medium to heavy oil patterns who want immediate, reliable hook without extensive tweaking. Bowlers who prefer assertive backend reaction and don’t require a “tame” or predictable ball will find the X-3’s higher differential and aggressive motion appealing straight out of the box. This ball rewards varied angles and adjustments, making it a strong choice for bowlers who like to move around the lanes and explore different launch points while maintaining confidence in pin action.
This equipment choice is less ideal for bowlers on high-friction house conditions, sport patterns, or those seeking a smoother, more controlled reaction down the lane. If you’re transitioning into competitive play or expect to encounter drier, more demanding lane conditions, a complementary ball with less angular motion would be a better pairing. However, for league play in typical house oil environments where backend aggression is an asset, the X-3 stands out as a premium, out-of-box-ready option worthy of a primary bag slot.
The Pros
- • Strong RST asymmetric core provides excellent continuation through the pins
- • MicroTrax Hybrid coverstock offers good versatility across medium to heavy oil
- • High flare potential creates impressive pin action and striking power
The Cons
- • 4K factory finish may be too aggressive for some medium oil conditions
- • Limited effectiveness on lighter oil patterns due to strong coverstock
Who Is This Ball For?
While no longer in production, the RST X-3 remains a solid option on the used market for bowlers needing reliable performance on medium-heavy oil conditions. The combination of the RST core and MicroTrax Hybrid coverstock delivers consistent hook potential with impressive pin action.
