Roto Grip Rubicon UC2 Review
While no longer in production, the Rubicon UC2 remains a solid option on the used market for power players seeking strong angular motion on medium-heavy oil. The combination of the asymmetric Rondure core and eTrax-P20 pearl coverstock delivers impressive hook potential with good length.
oh and smoke the pocket wow [Music] hey guys welcome back to jr pro shop vids cimu here and today we're going to be reviewing the new rubicon uc2 by rotogrip so you're not sure what the uc2 means like me it stands for ultimate concept 2. not entirely sure what the first ultimate concept was but we'll go with it so today we got jungle on the lanes we're filming the exact same day after our reality review if you haven't seen that one check it out up here in
typical jung fashion he was way too lazy to oil the lanes again so he's got a little help on the burn today so today jung will be comparing it against the original rubicon so both these balls have the same rendur core while this one has the e-track solid cover and this one has the e-trax pearl and the rst x1 here has the rst core and the microtrax hybrid cover stock which is stronger than the e-trax so the rst is definitely going to be more overall with the stronger core and stronger cover but they should have a pretty similar shape and again with the pearl here compared
to the original rubicon we expect it to be a little bit longer a little bit sharper and maybe a little less hook overall so all three balls have the same layout we'll have it up on the screen right now if you're new here we invite you to subscribe to our channel we have almost every new ball review and weekly content all right let's go watch jungle take four through the face [Music]
[Music] john's back actually never left just did the ball review for the reality on this lane rubicon you see two [Music] little dark little purple swirlies in there pink lettering based off where the reality struck this is my best guess where this will strike from let's give a shot [Music]
well that was a lucky guess that ball sure turns the corner hard down like wow so i just did the ball review for the reality on this lane so there's a little bit of wear there maybe three or four games with super high-end doll equipment so i think this is where these rubicons will really come in nice as these would be one step down from those high-end tanks because this is these are hp3 hook potential 3 if you didn't know that so same line as the rubicon uc-2 the pearl still the solid on the same one [Music]
should start up earlier be much smoother shape and i think it'll hook a little bit more [Music] oh it didn't hook more look the same that's interesting but definitely smoother though started a little earlier a little smoother went through the pins pretty good let's compare these two to the rst baby [Music]
so i think this ball is gonna be much stronger maybe three to four boards and it's going to turn the corner really hard so let's go same line to start [Music] yeah for sure i missed right there and it came back and smoked the pocket rc definitely hooks more for sure i missed right there at the arrows ended up in the same spot though
hallelujah all right let's go five left with the rst i think this should be the right one [Music] so many balls to choose from now if i go to a tournament i'm i'm boop man it's j r approach so barker's trying to write a song for the pro shop and he's got that stuck in my head now all right same one
as the rsd with the new rubicon it should go a little bit too far downwind might leave a tooth in here [Music] wow these balls are so good i wish it was easy to transport balls and i just bring 30. should i go further left let's go more left okay let's go five more left see what the ball can really do i know my bro really loves the original rubicon so i'm gonna make him get this one too and he really wants to be in a vid but uh he throws it kind of funny
[Music] i was all right i missed a little bit right there though but it almost came back i really like this ball this ball is going to be really good for later in the day when you still need something asymmetric give you that little predictability right with wet dry but it still got a good back end motion to see him way left really comes back nice all right let's throw the rubicon from way left there let's see what it does beaten path i forgot to mention earlier 41 feet about five to one so you know medium medium
try to hit the same mark as i did [Music] do that pretty similar rubicon started up a little earlier and just sort of peered out at the end there didn't really have the legs to kick left like the uc2 did so definitely a different shape down length i bet you the rst comes back from there [Music]
[Music] send it back to myself in the show
jungle's back in the shop rubicon uc2 wow this ball really turns the corner down compared to the original rubicon here and the rst which is one of my favorites from rotogrip from last year at first i thought it was going to hook less than the rubicon solid just because the cover is polished right pearl i thought it would go a little bit further down and hook a little bit less but be sharper overall but actually it was the same monohull it looked really similar to the solid even with the polished cover stock and but it was definitely sharper much much sharper
decided to throw a little rst in there as well one of my favorites from last year pretty similar to the rubicon solid just a little bit more overall because of the higher hook potential and a little more down lane as well with that being said it's pretty similar shape between these two just a little bit more overall from the rst i get a little bit further left there with the rst and it definitely hooks more than these rubicons went through the pins really well from far left so with my game i didn't really see too much of a difference between these two even with the different surfaces and the different cover stocks so someone a little bit lower speed a little bit more reverent than me you're going to see a little bit more separation between these two they
do complement each other really well already but just not enough difference for me to take both of them to a tournament i think so for me i like solid color bowling balls where you can't see the swirls rotating going down the lane i don't know why that is i'm weird uh so that's why i gravitate towards like the idols iq tours and then some of the new balls with darker solid colors like the rst here you can't see anything rotate going down lane so that's the switzer's mine that's what i like so that's what this one does for me as well so with that being said i also like that the rubicons are an hp3 line they're not on the top shelf but
they're still asymmetric right i know a few brands are missing those upper mid level bowling balls that are asymmetric so you don't have to go from a really high-end asymmetric and down to a sim right away there's something in between there i think i really like that that's uh really smart and definitely going to get a lot of use out of this these hp3 lineup asymmetrics might fill a lot of gaps for people i know for example i know a couple of my friends have a big gap between their asymmetric stuff and then like the mid-range phase twos and stuff like that and this is like really good to fit right in between there so if you're having that gap uh consider a
rubicon thanks for watching everyone like subscribe comment down below if the color of the ball influences your purchase for some it does i know that for sure and for some it doesn't so let me know what your thoughts are see you the next bit [Music] you
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed that the Rubicon UC2 delivers a notably sharper backend motion compared to its solid-cover counterpart, the original Rubicon, despite expectations that the pearl coverstock would produce a longer, smoother trajectory. On the test pattern—a 41-foot medium oil lane with established wear from high-end equipment—independent reviewers observed that the UC2 maintained similar overall hook potential to the solid but displayed significantly more defined corner-turning action and backend recovery when thrown from deeper angles. The pearl cover did produce a marginally earlier read in the midlane, translating to a quicker entry angle at the pins. When compared to the stronger RST X1 (which features a higher hook potential core and hybrid coverstock), the UC2 sat comfortably in the middle ground—generating noticeably less overall motion than the RST but maintaining more predictable, asymmetric-driven motion than entry-level symmetric options.
The UC2 proved particularly valuable as conditions transitioned throughout the session. Testing showed the ball maintained strong carry even as lane oil broke down, with the pearl surface providing adequate length without requiring constant adjustment. Testers noted that bowlers with moderate rev rates would likely observe more separation between the UC2 and the original Rubicon solid than higher-velocity players experienced, as the pearl’s sensitivity to oil patterns would become more pronounced at lower speeds. Surface adjustments were minimal during testing, suggesting the UC2 arrives match-ready for medium-heavy oil conditions and requires less maintenance bowling than some stronger asymmetric options in its class.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Rubicon UC2 is ideal for intermediate to advanced bowlers seeking an upper-midrange asymmetric without the premium price tag of high-end equipment. Bowlers who throw with moderate to high rev rates will appreciate the predictable, controlled backend motion that bridges the gap between entry-level symmetrics and tour-level asymmetrics. This ball particularly suits league and tournament players who need reliable performance on medium to medium-heavy oil but don’t want to carry multiple asymmetric options—the UC2’s sharp corner motion makes it a versatile choice as oil patterns evolve throughout competition.
Additionally, this ball fills an important equipment gap for bowlers who have moved beyond mid-range symmetrics but face budget or practical constraints that prevent investing in premium asymmetric arsenals. The HP3 hook potential classification positions it as a natural complement to solid-cover asymmetrics or entry-level equipment, making it especially valuable for players building out a balanced bag without excessive overlap.
The Pros
- • Strong hook potential with asymmetric Rondure core
- • Pearl coverstock provides good length through heads
- • Effective angular backend motion on medium-heavy oil
The Cons
- • Limited versatility outside medium-heavy conditions
- • May be too aggressive for lighter oil patterns
