Roto Grip Transformer Review
Smooth, continuous asymmetric that favors shape and control over raw angular power on medium-heavy oil. $199.95. Video reviews inside.
Hi, welcome back to my channel. If you're new here, my name is Malia Briggs, Storm Junior Stafer, and today I'm doing a ball review on the new Rotogrip Transformer. There's more to this ball than what meets the eye. It's a asymmetrical solid bowling ball. It comes factory finished 4,000 grit, and it has the same cover stock as the Gremlin, but it's a solid version. Now, the innovation team at Storm did really cool things with the core of this bowling ball. I'll get into that further in the wrap-up, but it's basically if you drill this ball different ways, it's going to roll a lot different. So, I'm really excited to see how this ball
rolls. And let's get into the ball review. [music] [music] [music] Okay, first ball here. Um, I will admit there's a lot of open bowling on one and two and there was some plastic balls
when I got here. So, I'm not sure how the lanes are going to be. Um, the first shot here with the Rogrip Transformer. [music] I think I'm going to stand on board 20 and start out. [music] >> [music] >> All right. >> Okay. Looks like there's some carry down in the lanes. So, let me try to get this ball a little bit further out.
Oh, that was good. Okay, let's see if I can't roll a good shot here. Oh, blower seven. All right. Well, that ball really drove hard off the gutter. Let's see if I can't throw another good shot here.
Oh, light mixer. Okay. Well, I'm getting that 10 pin out of there. I need to get the seven pin out. Okay. I'm standing on board 20. Oh yeah. at trip 4. Okay, here's a closeup of the transformer. Very pretty. Kind of matches my shirt. [laughter] Also got pink inserts in
there. All right, that last one was a trip four. Let's see if I can't throw that a shot here. >> All right, guys. We got two vehicles. >> Oh, yeah. That was 10 back. Uh, Toyota and >> Okay, bro. I really like the way that one looked. That one labeled the pocket.
Come on, ball. Oh, come on. Okay, I'm going to throw two more here with the Rotogrip Transformer. In the comments below, I want you guys to guess what ball I'm going to compare it to. It just a little hint. It's like one of my favorite bowling balls right now. Okay, two more shots here. Let's make it a good two. Oh,
okay. Last shot here. Oh, light mixer. Okay, the big reveal. I'm going to compare the Rotogrip Transformer to the Storm Equinox Solid. If you guys have been watching my league balls recently, this ball has been really good for me. A lot of 700 series with this ball. All
right, I'm a fan of board 20. See how it compares. The same spot I was standing with a rotograph transformer. All right. [music] Okay. Just looking at that first shot there, I think the transformer may have a little bit more pop down lane. Uh, which makes sense. All right. Let's throw some more shots here and see how it looks.
>> [music] >> Wow. >> Well, I had the right touch on that one. >> [music] >> Oh, light mixer. [music] Okay, so there is a difference between the two bowling balls as far as
surface. The Equinox comes factory finish 2000 grit, while the Transformer comes factory finish 4,000 grit. Now, I to be fair, I rode a lot of games with the Storm Equinox Solid and haven't retouched the surface at all. [music] There's quite a bit of lane shine on the Storm Equinox Solid. All right, stand on board 20 here. [music] Oh, yeah. [music]
Okay. Well, maybe I'm getting these lanes set up a little bit more here the more I bolt. All right, another shot here. Okay, one more shot here with the Storm Equinox Solid. Then I'm going to switch to my Rotogrip Transformer and get left and big wheel it and see how it looks. But I highly recommend the Storm Equinox
Solid. I rode a lot in League and it's getting to be my new favorite bowling ball. All right, last shot with the Storm Equinox Solid. >> [music] >> push. Oh, all right. [music] Okay, I'm going to switch out of my Storm Equinox Solid. I say this every video, but the Vice Interchangeables [music] are a lifesaver. I mean, all my balls feel the same. They're super easy to get in and out.
And if you hear that click, it's in. Now, I do have similar very similar layouts on the Stormy Equinox Solid and the Transformer. [music] All right, I'm gonna stand I'm g start out staying on board 25. Let's see how it looks when I get left here. As you guys saw from the last video, there's a big puddle of oil in the middle. So, [music] we'll try to get up there. [music] Okay, I'm going to try to make this, but I think I'm just going to have to get my
ball a little bit further on that [music] first ball. All right, let's give this a run. >> Oh, okay. Let's see if I can't get this ball further out and give it a nice touch. [music] >> Slow [singing] down a little bit. [music]
Got it inside. [music] Oh, it f through that oil. >> Okay. Well, I got that one inside a little bit, but I threw it slower and it f through that [music] oil. Let's see if I can get this one further out, though. [music] Oh, yeah. Okay, the speed was good again on that one. Whoever balls in the slay next, I'm going to have it broke down real good
for him. All right, 425. [music] Oh man, one more challenge. Okay, we're got the last one out there, but it came back. Okay, two more shots here. Standing [music] left. I'm going to get right in my feet and up that ball speed. We'll see how it looks. All right, two more shots here. Let's make it a good two. [music]
Oh yeah. Mix them up. Okay, one more here. Let's see if I can't repeat that one. I'm going to move to the right and on my ball speed. >> [music] [music] >> Okay. Okay. Uh, we're going to get right here up the ball speed. I'm not sure how this is going to look. As you guys saw from
the characteristics of the lanes, the oil in the middle is really heavy and on the outside it's whipping. So, we'll see how it looks. I'm going to try board 17 here to start out with. [music] [music] Well, okay. Well, there's not much wall outside of five, so we'll see what I can do. Yeah. See if I can get a good shot here. 417.
[music] >> [music] >> Point proven. [music] >> Okay, let's see if I can get it out to the gutter here. [music] [music] All right. Okay, last one here. Standing right and I'll do a wrap-up. The last one was
closer to a strike. Let's see if I can end it on a strike, though. [music] Oh, it was a strike. Okay, recap. I'm back at my house. The mic died at the bowling center, but as I mentioned in the intro, depending on how you drill this ball, it will perform drastically different. Now, I drill mine pinned up and I didn't hit the wing part
of the core. So, it's supposed to go down way further and have more pop at the end. You can also drill it pinned down and hit that wing core and it's supposed to roll smoother. I'm kind of interested to see how that looks. So, I might get another one and test that out, but I have rolled that ball since the ball review and it looks amazing. I may don't want to say this about every ball I do, but I truly like this one. And if you guys been watching throughout this whole video, what you doing? Like, subscribe. See you in the next one. Thanks for watching. Bye.
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Roto Grip Transformer to be a controlled, smooth-arcing ball with moderate overall strength—designed for predictability rather than aggressive backend motion. Out of the box at 4,000 grit, the ball demonstrated a clean, rounded shape through the front part of the lane. Independent reviewers observed that the Transformer tracked smoothly on fresh house shot conditions and delivered reliable continuation into the pins without excessive skid or early hook. When compared directly to the Hyperdrive Pearl and Heckler Hybrid on the same test pattern, the Transformer occupied a middle ground: noticeably stronger than the Hyperdrive Pearl but with a later, more controlled arc than the Heckler Hybrid. The reactive solid coverstock produced a predictable motion path, making it easier to adjust line and speed without dramatic performance swings.
The asymmetric core’s variable differential design—which allows for drilling layouts that can increase or decrease dynamic differential—proved useful but not transformative on the house shot tested. Reviewers noted that selecting different drilling layouts (such as shorter pin distances like 3.5 to 4 inches versus the tested 5-inch pin) could potentially intensify the ball’s response. While testers didn’t describe the Transformer as a high-flare powerhouse, they acknowledged it as a reliable, usable option that fit well into a typical bowler’s arsenal without requiring lane conditions to be pristine or ball speed to be exceptionally high.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Transformer suits bowlers who value consistency and control over raw hook potential. Players transitioning from entry-level reactive coverstock balls to something with more defined motion will find this ball’s moderate strength and predictable arc approachable without being underwhelming. It works well for bowlers who throw on fresh or well-oiled house shots and prefer to adjust their angle and speed rather than rely on aggressive backend reaction. Recreational and lower-sport league bowlers will appreciate the ball’s forgiving nature and straightforward performance characteristics.
This ball is less ideal for bowlers seeking a heavy-flare, aggressive asymmetric that dominates heavy oil or demanding medium-heavy conditions. Experienced strokers who need extreme versatility or players building a multi-ball arsenal for tournament play may find the Transformer’s moderate strength a limiting factor. However, at the $199.95 price point, it offers solid value for someone seeking a dependable second or primary ball that rewards clean technique without punishing minor inconsistencies.
The Pros
- • All-new Morph-Wing asymmetric core introduces a smooth, continuous motion profile different from other Roto Grip asymmetrics
- • V-R1 Solid with Power Edge finish provides a versatile reaction that handles house and sport patterns
- • 2.51 RG with .051 differential creates a balanced blend of length and midlane read
- • Strong 9.0 pin action — the Morph-Wing core drives through the deck with consistent carry
The Cons
- • Premium price at $199.95 — the most expensive ball in the current Roto Grip lineup
- • New core platform means less real-world track record compared to proven designs like the RST + AI
- • The smooth motion may feel underwhelming to bowlers coming from more angular equipment
